Cartoons and Comics
Using Comic-Strip Apps in the Classroom
-tips from your School Librarian-
Do you want to have fun incorporating comic strip apps into your classroom? Want to enjoy the engaging and interactive learning experiences they can provide?
Here are three useful ways teachers can utilize apps that
create comic strips to enhance student engagement in the classroom and three apps
that you can use:
Use Comic-Strips for Storytelling and Summarization
Encourage students to create
comic strips to retell stories or summarize important concepts. Apps like
Pixton, or Comic Life allow students to visually represent the key
elements of a narrative or condense information into concise comic panels. This
activity promotes critical thinking, and creativity, and helps students develop
their storytelling skills while engaging with the content.
Using Pixton to summarize 'The 3 Little Pigs' example:
Pixton App Review
Using the Pixon platform with school-aged students in the
classroom can be fantastic!
Pixon is an incredible tool that allows students to create
their own animated stories. The user-friendly interface makes it easy to
navigate and unleash creativity. I was able to choose from a wide range of characters,
backgrounds, and props to bring the story to life.
What I really appreciate about Pixon is how it combines
storytelling with technology. It's not just about writing a story but also
about animating it, you can even add voiceovers or sound effects. This has the possibility
to engage students on multiple levels and encourages them to think critically
and express themselves in unique ways.
Pixon does have a collaborative feature that allows students
to work together on projects, fostering teamwork and communication skills.
Overall, Pixon can be a game-changer in the classroom. It
sparks the imagination, boosts digital literacy, and makes learning fun. I highly recommend
giving it a try if you want to ignite your students' creativity and take
storytelling to a whole new level!
Use Comic-Strips for Visualizing Vocabulary and Concepts
Comic strips can be a fantastic tool for reinforcing
vocabulary acquisition and conceptual understanding. Teachers can have students
use comic strip apps to illustrate vocabulary words or complex concepts in a
visual and engaging manner. This process helps students deepen their
understanding by connecting visual representations to the meaning of words or
ideas, making learning more memorable and enjoyable.
Using FotoJet to Visualize Concept of Meiosis example:
Using FotoJet's collage comic feature to visualize the concept
of meiosis was a blast!
FotoJet is a fantastic online design tool that offers a
variety of creative features, including its collage comic feature. It allowed
me to create engaging and visually appealing comic strips that brought the
process of meiosis to life.
Using FotoJet's collage comic feature, I could easily combine images, text, and speech bubbles to tell the story of meiosis in a fun and interactive way. My students would love the comic strip format, and it makes the concept so much easier to understand and remember.
Although the full range of features requires an upgrade, I found the free version of FotoJet to be quite useful for this and other small purposes. The intuitive interface and drag-and-drop functionality would make it simple for students to create their own comic strips to showcase their understanding of a concept.
If you're looking to make science lessons more exciting and engaging, FotoJet's collage comic feature is definitely worth exploring. While the upgrade offers additional features, the free version still provides plenty of creative opportunities for your classroom.
Get ready to unleash your inner comic artist and make learning a memorable experience!
Use Comic-Strips for Collaborative Projects and Presentations
I couldn't wait to share my experience using
MakeBeliefsComix because it has been an absolute game-changer!
MakeBeliefsComix is a fantastic online tool that can bring so
much creativity and collaboration into the classroom. It's perfect for
showcasing presentations in a unique and engaging way. Plus, the best part?
It's completely free!
With MakeBeliefsComix, students can easily create their own
comic strips by selecting characters, and backgrounds, and adding text to tell
their stories or present their ideas. The intuitive interface makes it a breeze
for even elementary school students to navigate and create impressive comic
strips.
Not only does MakeBeliefsComix allow students to express
their creativity, but it also promotes collaboration. Students can work
together on a single comic strip, sharing ideas and building their
communication skills.
I can see that having the ability to save, share, or print comic strips can add an extra layer of excitement and pride for students. Students
love seeing their creations come to life and sharing them with their classmates
and families.
If you're looking for a fun and user-friendly tool to
enhance presentations and foster collaboration in your classroom, I highly
recommend giving MakeBeliefsComix a try. Your students will thank you for the
opportunity to unleash their creativity and showcase their ideas in a whole new
way!
Using Comic-Strip Apps in the Classroom
-tips for the School Librarian to share with teacher-colleagues-
Emphasizing the educational value of comics and providing
practical examples and resources will help your teacher-colleagues understand
the potential impact of incorporating comics in their instruction.
Professional Development Workshops
Organize a professional
development workshop specifically focused on incorporating comics in the
classroom. Highlight the educational benefits of using comics as a teaching
tool, such as improving reading comprehension, fostering visual literacy, and
engaging reluctant readers. Provide examples of how comics can be integrated
into different subject areas and grade levels. Demonstrate various strategies
for using comics in lesson plans, including creating graphic novel book clubs,
using comics as a form of assessment, or encouraging students to create their
own comics. This hands-on workshop will give your colleagues practical ideas
and resources to confidently incorporate comics into their teaching practice.
Collaboration and Resource Sharing
Actively collaborate
with your teacher-colleagues by sharing resources, lesson plans, and success
stories related to using comics. Create a shared folder or online platform
where you can upload and exchange materials, such as recommended comic titles,
lesson plans, and graphic novel reviews. Encourage open discussions and
brainstorming sessions to explore innovative ways of using comics across
different subjects. By fostering a collaborative environment, you'll inspire
your colleagues to experiment with comics in their classrooms and create a
supportive community of educators who can learn from each other's experiences.

Hi Trinidad!
ReplyDeleteGreat comic strips, I especially love the Pixton Three Little Pigs comic strip. This was my favorite website out of the three I worked with.
Trini, I absolutely love everything about your blog page for this class! How did you organize it into these sections like this??? That makes it so much easier to see your different posts and topics. I love that! You cartoons are so cute! I had to laugh at the adopt a cat one to get more kids in the library. I actually tried that last year, but my principal wouldn't let me because we have too many kids with allergies! LOL!
